Overview
Siachen Base Camp, which is located in the eastern Karakoram Range of the Himalayas, has the distinction of being one of the highest military outposts in the world. It stands above 5.000 meters (16,400 ft) at an altitude higher than sea level in Jammu and Kashmir northmost part making it a challenging and remote destination.
Accessibility: The Siachen Base Camp is very hard to access because it can only be reached by air or on foot and only military personnel are allowed since this place is always under threat from its neighbors. It does not cater for non-military tourists.
Altitude: The Siachen base camp is known for its enormous altitudes, with camp and adjacent summits reaching more than 5,000 meters high. This great height makes any visitor to this place vulnerable to issues such as extreme weather conditions and altitude sickness among others.
Landscape: At Siachen Base Camp, the landscape is marked by tall snow-capped peaks, enormous glaciers and tough rough terrain of rocks. It is a place that is severe and amazing at the same time, showing the natural strength and beauty of the Himalayas.
Attractions: The major function of Siachen Base Camp is to act as a strategic military installations with spectacular views of some of the tallest mountains in the world like Saltoro Kangri and Teram Kangri. Nevertheless, entrance to these sites is tightly controlled, and guests should observe strict regulations.
Culture: There are very few people living around Siachen Base Camp itself. The culture in that region is driven mainly by Army presence and difficulties encountered due to harsh weather conditions.
Best Time to Visit: Siachen Base Camp cannot be visited during its “tourist season” since it is a highly elevated area with intense climatic conditions. The admission to this location tends to be restricted thus only available for special cases, usually authorised expeditions or military staff on duty.
