Overview
Gandhinagar is the capital of the western Indian state of Gujarat. It is situated on the banks of the river Sabarmati, about 23 km north of the metropolis of Ahmedabad.
History: Gandhinagar was established in 1960 as the new capital of Gujarat, replacing Ahmedabad. The city was named after Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian nation in honour of his contribution to the Indian freedom movement.
Attractions:
Akshardham Temple: One of the major attractions in Gandhinagar, Akshardham Temple is a magnificent architectural marvel known for its intricate sculptures and peaceful atmosphere and is a major pilgrimage site for the Swaminarayan sect dedicated to followers of Lord Swaminarayan
Indroda Nature Park: Spread over 400 hectares, Indroda Nature Park is considered one of the largest parks in Asia. It is home to rare plants and animals. The park also has a dinosaur garden, making it an educational and fun place for visitors of all ages.
Sarita Udyan - Also known as Bal Nikunj, Sarita Udyan is a famous recreation centre in Gandhinagar. It features lush greenery, artificial lawns and a variety of children’s play areas, making it an ideal place for families to relax and unwind.
Capital Complex: Designed by the famous architect Le Corbusier, the Capital Complex in Gandhinagar is an architectural masterpiece. It is the seat of the state government including the Assembly, Secretariat and Supreme Court. The area is known for its modern design and geometric designs.
Adalaz Step Well: Located on the outskirts of Gandhinagar, Adalaz Step Well is a historic step well built in the 15th century. Known for its intricate sculptures and impressive architecture, it is a popular tourist destination and a symbol of Gujarat’s rich cultural heritage.
Local Food: Gujarati cuisine is known for its variety and taste. Some of the famous dishes to try in Gandhinagar include Dhokla, Khandvi, Thepla, Undhiyu, and Gujarati Thali, which have a variety of sweet and savory dishes usually accompanied by bread or rice.
